Villadangos del Páramo is a place on the Camino de Santiago in the province of León in the autonomous community of Castile and León . The municipality also includes the places Celadilla del Páramo and Fojedo del Páramo .

Origin of name

There are two attempts to explain the place name

  • "Villa de Eneco". Eneco is a Basque given name and could have been the founder or landlord during the Reconquista or the subsequent repopulation.
  • "Villa de Angos (or Ancos)", u. U. a Franconian pilgrim who played an important role during the repopulation.

history

The origin of Villadango could be found in the settlement of Vallata the Asturians , which was conquered bloodlessly by the Romans . It is mentioned in ancient itineraries . After the Moorish invasion in the eighth century, the place was abandoned until 714 due to various fighting. At the end of the 9th and beginning of the 10th centuries, the area began to be repopulated under the kings of León .

In 1111, Villadangos was the scene of an armed conflict between Galician supporters of Queen Urraca of León-Castile and Alfonso I of Aragón , subject to the possessions of Prince Alfonso, son of Urraca and future Alfonso VII. The battle at that time takes its name from the meeting place given, which is still called "La Matanza". From 1112 to 1580 Viadangos was part of ecclesiastical possessions, in 1788 Charles III awarded. (Spain) the title of Margrave of Villadangos (Marqués de Villadangos), which existed until about 1837.

Until the end of the 19th century, the economy was limited to keeping animals (sheep and goats) and growing grain for self-sufficiency. With the arrival of the railroad, industry developed which brought the village to a period of prosperity. Until the 1950s the population increased and reached 700 inhabitants. At the station, the “station district” (Barrio de la Estación), a district with a mixture of residential and commercial areas, developed.

In 1967 two projects were started: the agricultural plots were concentrated and the improvement of the Páramo Leones ("Riegos del Páramo") began. For the latter, a system of irrigation canals and a dam in Barrios de Luna were created. Both measures improved the basis for agriculture considerably, while industry and the service sector developed.

With the incorporation of Celadilla del Páramo and Fojedo del Páramo, the number of inhabitants increased to over 1000. The urbanización Camino de Santiago, which was planned as a holiday complex in the 1970s, is used all year round, but the number of residents doubles in summer. A third construction phase is currently being implemented, which will once again significantly increase the size of the settlement.

Recently, a large industrial area of 200 hectares was opened in which various large companies produce.
