Around the middle of the 19th century the population of the municipality was around 1,400 people; towards the end of the 19th century there were even over 3,000. Due to the increasing mechanization of agriculture , however, there was a lack of jobs afterwards, which triggered a persistent rural exodus in the mountain villages .
economy
Until the mid-20th century, the residents of the community lived mainly as a self from the field economy and of some livestock; some worked as carters in the region. Today many empty houses are rented out as holiday apartments ( casas rurales ).
history
Only recently, petroglyphs dating from the Bronze Age have been discovered on some rocks ; some also consider gold prospectors to be the originators - the Romans mined gold in Las Medulas, just 20 kilometers to the west, and probably also in the area of the municipality of Lucillo. Visigoths and Moors , on the other hand, have left no archaeologically usable traces. In the Middle Ages and afterwards, the area around Lucillo belonged to the manor ( señorio ) of the Astorga diocese . Since the 16th century, a regionally important market took place in Lucillo, to which the goods were transported by carts, with which the mountain residents secured a small additional income.
Attractions
- The petroglyphs are mainly round indentations the size of a thimble, also called “ bowls ” ( cazoletas ); there are also circular, spiral and even labyrinth-like motifs.
- The mostly single-storey older houses in the various hamlets were all built from rubble stones ; they have only a few and mostly small windows, which in earlier times were not glazed but closed with wooden shutters. A few two-story houses have a south-facing wooden balcony .
- The small parish churches were also built from quarry stones and usually have entrances on the south side and a bell gable ( espadaña ) in the west - otherwise, any external decoration had to be dispensed with.
