Medieval bridge of Puente de Órbigo

Hospital de Órbigo is a municipality ( municipality ) on the Camino de Santiago in the province of León in the autonomous community of Castile and León .

In the Middle Ages there was already a small village on the left bank of the Río Órbigo River . This village, which had formed around the church of Santa Maria, was named after the bridge Puente de Órbigo . At the end of the sixteenth century, another settlement arose on the right bank of the river near the old pilgrimage route Camino Francés . There the Sovereign Knights and Hospital Order of St. John of Jerusalem built a hospital (Spanish Hospital) and the place was named Hospital de Órbigo.

The Puente de Orbigo bridge became famous through an event during the holy year 1434, the so-called Paso Honroso of the Leonese knight Suero de Quinones.
