Itero de la Vega is a small town on the Camino de Santiago in the province of Palencia in the autonomous community of Castile and León .
The name of the village comes - like that of the neighboring village of Itero del Castillo and the nearby bridge Puente de Itero - from the former border location with the county of Castile. Itero comes from Hito - boundary stone , which in turn goes back to the Latin petra ficta - (boundary) stone rammed into the ground . While the county of Castile ended on the other bank of the Pisuerga - today the province of Burgos - the traveler entered the first place of the Tierra de Campos with Itero de la Vega . In the Crónica Albeldense this landscape is mentioned as Campi Gothorum - Gothic fields , today the village is in the province of Palencia.
Attractions
The parish church of San Pedro was built in the 16th century on the foundations of a 13th century church. The Gothic portal from the 13th century was preserved.
At the entrance to the village is the Ermita de la Piedad hermitage , also from the 13th century. It houses a wooden carved figure of Santiago as a pilgrim.
