Herrera de Pisuerga is a small town 25 kilometers north of the Camino de Santiago in the province of Palencia in the Autonomous Community of Castile and León . It is located on the banks of the Río Burejo shortly before its confluence with the Río Pisuerga and houses the remains of a Roman fortification.

history

Herrera's origins go back to the Roman garrison of Pisoraca . At the time of Augustus between 20 before and 40 after the birth of Christ, the garrison was the base of the Legio IIII Macedonica during the subjugation of the Cantabrians in the Cantabrian War . Later excavations show that the place was a Visigoth settlement .

In the 14th century, King Alfonso XI. of Castile Herrera for 180,000 Maravedís and promoted the reconstruction and repopulation of the place. Later, King John I of Castile transferred control of the place to the Dukes of Frías , who owned the place until the 19th century. Under their rule, a Franciscan monastery was founded in the 15th century .

In 1517 and 1522, Emperor Charles V came through Herrera twice. At the end of the 18th century, the construction of the Canal de Castilla began , but the economic use was initially prevented by the occupation of Spain by France at the beginning of the 19th century. As a result of secularization , the monastery was dissolved after 1836 and a modest economic boom began in the middle of the century with the settlement of some margarine factories and the grain trade. The railway reached the place in 1862 and María Cristina, regent of Spain , granted Herrera city rights in 1902.

The Aeródromo , located four kilometers east of the CL-627, served as a field airfield during the Spanish Civil War , especially during the war in the north , for parts of Jagd- and Kampfgruppe 88 of the German Condor Legion . There was another airfield in the area of the municipality of Calahorra de Boedo, a few kilometers southwest.

Attractions
