Velilla del Río Carrión is a town and municipality in the province of Palencia , in the autonomous community of Castile and León , Spain . The district is located in Montaña Palentina , along with the provinces of León and Cantabria . Velilla del Río Carrión has a population of 1268 inhabitants (INE as of January 1, 2019).

In the last century, the city was under the dominant influence of coal mining , which is currently in a serious crisis that has led to a sharp decline in the population. The only industry that remained is the power plant Velilla company Iberdrola , which was shut down on June 30 2020th

There is evidence that Cantabrians , namely Tamaro, were the first inhabitants of the area and lived around the third century BC. Tamari founded, this corresponds to today's Velilla. Until 1949 the name of the city was Velilla de Guardo .
