The continuous population decline in the second half of the 20th century is mainly due to the mechanization of agriculture and the associated loss of jobs.

economy

The inhabitants of Boadilla live mainly from agriculture. Of the approx. 2800 hectares of cultivation area, approx. 1900 hectares are used for grain ( wheat , barley ), another 850 hectares are irrigable and are planted with clover , beet , maize or sunflowers . Livestock farming also plays a major role - there are on average almost twenty head of cattle for every inhabitant.

An additional source of income has resulted from the boarding and accommodation of the St. James pilgrims, the number of which has increased sharply since the early 1990s. The private hostel is open almost all year round, the communal hostel only accepts pilgrims in summer.

history

The name of the village refers to the Camino de Santiago. Boadilla, like many other places in what is now the province of Palencia, was founded in the last third of the 10th century. The prerequisite for this was the military successes in the context of the Reconquista . The compilation of the local law, the Fuero Municipal , dates to the year 970 for the place, confirmed by García Fernández , son and successor of the first Count of Castile, Fernán González .

Attractions

  • The Iglesia Nuestra Señora de la Asunción , rebuilt in the 16th century above a demolished Romanesque church in Gothic style , is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary . Its three naves have been rib vaulted since 1770 and, in addition to the main altar from the 16th century, whose figures are attributed to Juan de Cambray , Mateo Lancrín and other carvers, another altar in the Renaissance style and a baptismal font with relief from the 14th century.
  • Immediately behind the church is a 7.60 m high late Gothic court column ( rollo or picota ) on a stepped round base , the rich figurative and decorative decoration of which encompasses all parts of the monument. Such a court pillar was a symbol of judicial power in Castile as well as a place of judgment and enforcement. It is said that the convicts were tied to the pillar in order to carry out the verdicts that were passed.
  • A spring ( fuente vieja ) in the east of the village was often the first thing that interested the thirsty Jacob pilgrims.
  • In the immediate vicinity of the spring, a wash house ( lavadero ) was built in the 19th century .
