Villamuriel de Cerrato is a Spanish municipality with 6,469 inhabitants in the province of Palencia in the autonomous community of Castile-Leon .
The church of Santa María la Mayor in Villamuriel de Cerrato is a Catholic church that was built in the 13th century in the early Gothic or Proto-Gothic style and within which can still be seen as a transition into the Romanesque. Its refined architecture, free of any reconstruction or subsequent extensions of various styles (except in the tower), makes it a cultural monument in Castilla y León. Its most outstanding element is the octagonal dome on a radial vault with Romanesque representations.
Adolfo Nicolás SJ (1936-2020) was born in Villamuriel de Cerrato. He was a Spanish Jesuit and Roman Catholic theologian and from 2008 to 2016 the 30th General of the Jesuits.
