Hornillos del Camino is a municipality on the Way of St. James in the province of Burgos in the autonomous community of Castile and León . It is located about 25 kilometers west of the provincial capital.
history
Hornillos is first mentioned in the 9th century in connection with a defensive line of fortified towers in early Castile . Part of this line were also the towns of Tardajos , Rabé de las Calzadas and Castrojeriz .
The place was then called "Forniellos" (small oven), which referred to the brick and lime kilns that were in operation at the time.
Alfonso VII donated Hornillos del Camino to the Abbey of Saint-Denis in France. Later a monastery was founded in the place, which was subordinate to the French monastery Notre Dame in Rocamadour . In its weddings it was run by twelve monks and had a hostel and infirmary for the pilgrims of the Camino Francés. Alfons VIII donated the monastery to the place in 1181, which Ferdinand III. 1217 confirmed.
Altogether there were three pilgrims' hospices in Hornillos: San Lázaro, for lepers , Holy Spirit and another, not known by name, of which no structural evidence is available today.
In 1936 Visigoth graves with ceramics and precious metals as grave goods were discovered in Hornillos . A figured part of a grave was built into a house as a lintel .
