The mechanization of agriculture , the abandonment of small farms and the associated loss of jobs have led to a significant decline in the number of inhabitants since the middle of the 20th century ( rural exodus ).
economy
The high-altitude area was well suited as summer pasture and so hunters and shepherds are likely to have been the first visitors to the area. The later residents of the rural community lived mainly from agriculture (agriculture, cattle breeding). Since the 1960s, the summer rental of holiday homes (casas rurales) has also played a certain economic role.
history
Almost nothing is known about the origins of the place. Traces of a Celtic high fortress were discovered on Monte Soncarazo . Roman , Visigoth and even Moorish traces are missing. In the early 10th century, the area was conquered by the Christians under the leadership of King Alfonso III. recaptured ( reconquista ) and then repopulated or repopulated ( repoblación ) ; The place was probably built around this time.
Attractions
- The Iglesia de Santa Eugenia , built largely from precisely hewn stones, is dedicated to the martyr Eugenia of Rome . The building was probably built in the 16./17. Century; it has a bell tower (campanario) and a simple portal in the classic style. In the nave (nature) is still the Romanesque baptismal font of the previous building; the apse is dominated by a classicistic multi-figure altarpiece (retablo) .
- The surrounding landscape is ideal for all kinds of hikes.
Others
In 1966 some landscape shots of the film Two Glorious Scoundrels by Sergio Leone were shot in the municipality.
