history
With the growth of settlements in the area of the Westerberg in the interwar period, the local Catholics strove to build their own church, as they were dependent on churches in the inner city. After the Second World War, the number of Catholics rose again due to the influx of refugees from Silesia, so that a church was inevitable.
The British site commander of the Osnabrück garrison had already set up a Catholic chapel for members of the army in a former Wehrmacht barracks on the corner of Barbara- and Sedanstraße. In 1946 a request from the cathedral parish that services be read there for Germans was granted by the British garrison. The barracks were supposed to be removed in 1947, but they were moved to Sedanstrasse.
Later, on the corner of Natruperstrasse and Barbarastrasse, a piece of land was acquired where a stone church was to be built. Barbarastraße had been named after the patron saint of the artillerymen who were there in the barracks at the time since 1908.
Ernst Kroeber and Hans Rickmann planned the church as architects in 1961, the groundbreaking ceremony took place on February 18, 1962 by cathedral priest Franz Kramer. The foundation stone was laid on August 12, 1962 by Vicar General Wilhelm Ellermann. At the same time as the church was consecrated, Bishop Helmut Hermann Wittler removed it from the cathedral parish on September 4, 1965.
In 1977 acoustic plaster was applied in the church to improve the sound conditions. Since the plaster soon became crumbly, it was supplemented by perforated stones. In July 1990 four bells with the names: Barbara, Maria, Petrus and Niels Stensen were purchased and hung in the tower. In 2009 and 2010 the facade of the church was restored.
In the meantime, St. Barbara has become a branch church of the cathedral parish through a church merger.
Outside
The church tower has a height of 36 meters. In 1966 the church was expanded to include a rectory, a youth home and a kindergarten. Pastor Hermann Jansen, who was the first pastor of the parish, died in 1970. There is a memorial cross on one side of the church.
Interior decoration
The Alfhausen sculptor Hermann Auf der Heide created the tabernacle shrine , which was given the appearance of a rock group with rock crystals. It is supposed to remind of the legend of St. Barbara.
