Location and climate
The place Vadocondes lies in a bend in the river of Duero around 100 km (driving distance) south of Burgos at an altitude of about 810 m ; the town of Aranda de Duero is only 12 km to the west. The climate in winter is harsh, but in summer it is rather dry and warm; Rain (approx. 450 mm / year) falls mainly in the winter half-year.

The mechanization of agriculture and the abandonment of small farms have led to a loss of jobs since the 1950s and, as a result, to a significant decline in the population ( rural exodus ).
economy
Agriculture, which also included some animal husbandry (e.g. pigs, sheep, chickens), has always played the most important role for the population of the region; Crafts, trade and service industries developed on a small scale in the village itself. The municipality belongs to the Ribera del Duero wine region . Several houses in the village are now rented out as holiday apartments (casas rurales) .
history
Copper and Bronze Age as well as Roman small finds were made in the municipality; on the other hand, there are no finds from the Celtic , Visigothic and even from the Islamic - Moorish period. Around the year 910 the Castilian Count Gonzalo Fernández recaptured the areas north of the Duero for the Christians ( reconquista ) ; only slowly did they venture further south (see Peñafiel ). The place name appears for the first time in a document from 1136. King Ferdinand IV of Castile endowed the place with its own rights and privileges at the beginning of the 14th century ( foros ) .
Attractions
- The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción , consecrated to the Assumption of Mary , is a three-aisled late Gothic building whose rather strict side baroque portal was added in the 18th century. Of the three baroque altarpieces (retablos) in the church, the middle one deserves special mention.
- On a stepped octagonal base behind the apse of the church stands a court column (roller blind) as a symbol of the extensive self-government of the place. The fluted column shaft and the capital with four lion heads suggest that it was built in the 16th century.
- The rather austere Arco de Vadocondes , built in the 17th century, presents a stone double eagle coat of arms .
