Barbadillo del Mercado is a place and a municipality ( municipio ) with only 142 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) in the province of Burgos and the region of Castile-León in northern Spain . The place belongs to the poorly populated region of the Serranía Celtibérica .

Location and climate

The place Barbadillo del Mercado is located on the upper reaches of the Río Arlanza on the south side of the Cantabrian Mountains at an altitude of about 950  m about 50 km (driving distance) southeast of the city of Burgos . The climate in winter is harsh, but in summer it is dry and warm; Rain (approx. 545 mm / year) falls mainly in the winter half-year.

The mechanization of agriculture and the abandonment of small farms led to a significant decline in population in the second half of the 20th century.

economy

Agriculture, which also included a little cattle breeding (e.g. pigs, chickens), has always played the most important role for the population of the region; Crafts, trade and service industries developed on a small scale in the village itself. Several houses in the village are now rented out as holiday apartments (casas rurales) .

history

The place was probably founded or repopulated ( repoblación ) in the 9th or 10th century ; in 1255 it was handed over to the Archdiocese of Burgos by Alfonso X. In the 15./16. In the 19th century, there was a regionally important wool market here - hence the name del Mercado . Barbadillo has been an independent municipality since 1759.

  • The Church of San Pedro is dedicated to the Apostle Peter . It dates from the 16th century and has three aisles with a flat apse . The portal on the first floor of the bell tower was bricked up at some point and has been on the south side ever since.
  • The court column (rollo or picota) on the forecourt of the church reminds of the autonomy of the community.
  • The church of La Trinidad belonged to a Dominican monastery . Its construction began in 1597. The rather unadorned west facade shows three stone heraldic shields above the portal, a small round window and a bell gable decorated with stone balls (espadaña) . The church was restored in 2000.
  • Several imposing aristocratic palaces with stone heraldic shields from the 16th / 17th centuries. Century remind of the heyday of the place.
