The mechanization of agriculture and the abandonment of small farms have led to a lack of jobs and a migration of a large part of the population to the cities since the 1950s ( rural exodus ). The municipality also includes the hamlets (pedanías) Arcellares , Barrio Panizares , Fuente Úrbel , Hoyos del Tozo , La Piedra , Prádanos del Tozo , La Rad , San Mamés de Abar , Santa Cruz del Tozo , Talamillo , which have only around 10 to 30 inhabitants del Tozo and Trasahedo .
economy
For centuries, the region has been characterized almost exclusively by agriculture, which is mainly used for self-sufficiency ; Animal husbandry is of great importance . Tourism (rental of holiday apartments) is playing an increasingly important role.
history
Finds from the Celtic , Roman , Visigothic and even from the Islamic - Moorish period have not yet been made in the municipality. Although the first written mention of the place name dates back to 1511, it is assumed that the establishment of the place and that of the other villages in the area at the instigation of the second Count of Castile , Diego Rodríguez Porcelos (r. 873-885), goes back, which - after the driving back of the Moors - tried hard to repopulate ( repoblación ) the area.
