Palacios de la Sierra is a place and a municipality ( municipio ) belonging to the poorly populated region of Serranía Celtibérica with a total of only 725 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) in the northern Spanish province of Burgos in the autonomous community of Castile-León .
Location and climate
The place Palacios de la Sierra is located on the south bank of the Río Arlanza in the Sierra de la Demanda at an altitude of approx. 1070 m . The provincial capital Burgos is a good 75 km (driving distance) in a north-westerly direction; the small town of Salas de los Infantes is only about 18 km northwest. The climate is temperate to warm; Rain (approx. 575 mm / year) falls mainly in the winter half-year.

The significant population decline since the 1950s is mainly due to the mechanization of agriculture , the abandonment of small farms and the resulting lack of jobs in the countryside and especially in the mountain regions.
economy
Palacios de la Sierra is located on the former and still used road between Soria and Burgos . In addition to the usual self-sufficiency based on agriculture and cattle breeding, goods and ideas also came to the small town, where traders, craftsmen and service providers settled. Today summer tourism plays a not insignificant role in the economic life of the municipality.
history
Finds from the Celtic , Roman , Visigothic and even from the Islamic-Moorish period are largely missing. The area originally used as summer pasture was probably recaptured ( reconquista ) by Count Diego Rodríguez Porcelos at the end of the 9th century ; their repopulation ( repoblación ) was mainly carried out by Christians from the north and south of the Iberian Peninsula. In the Middle Ages the place belonged to the regionally important community association of Alfoz de Lara .
Attractions
- The local parish church (Iglesia de Santa Eulalia) dating to the end of the 16th century is St. Dedicated to Eulalia of Mérida . It stands on the site of a previous Romanesque building, of which parts of the bell tower (campanario) and the font (pila bautismal) have been preserved. The south portal shows decorative forms from the Renaissance . The three-aisled late Gothic hall church has star vaults and several baroque altarpieces (retablos) ; the three-aisles and the furnishings testify to the former importance of the place.
- The four-arched stone bridge (Puente de Dehesilla) over the Río Arlanza dates from around the same time.
- Surroundings
- In the vicinity of the place there are - the only remains of former settlements - four medieval burial places: In the Necrópolis de el Castillo over 500 stone graves were discovered; the Necrópolis de Bañuelos consists mainly of rock tombs, whereas the Necrópolis de Nava has more than 50 sarcophagi and is dated somewhat later; the Necrópolis de Pajares is the smallest of them all.
