economy

In the first place in the economic life of the municipality traditionally ranks agriculture and especially livestock. In addition, wheat, barley, potatoes and vegetables are cultivated. Glauberite salts are extracted in a mine , from which various sulphurous substances (especially sodium sulphate or Glauber's salt ) are produced.

history

The first Celtiberian tribes to settle here were the Autrigones and Berons , with the Río Tirón possibly forming a kind of border between the settlement areas of the two tribal groups. In ancient times, a Roman road led through the area, which connected Tarragona ( Tarraco ) or Saragossa (Caesaraugusta) with Astorga ( Asturica Augusta ) . The Arab-Berber armies also moved here, but left the climatically unfamiliar areas again, so that settlers from the north and south of the Iberian Peninsula settled here in the 10th and 11th centuries . Gonzalo Téllez , Count of Lantarón and Cerezo, was one of the leading forces in repopulation ( repoblación ) in the 10th century . Under the strong rule of Sancho III. and Ferdinand I of León , Cerezo lost its status as (part of) a county. In 1151, Alfonso VII of Castile gave Cerezo a confirmation of his privileges and customary rights ( fueros ) . In 1822, Cerezo was added to the newly created province of Logroño , from which it broke away 11 years later and joined the province of Burgos .

  • Some gold bracelets and earrings, which are kept in the Museo de Burgos , date from pre-Roman times .
  • Two small bridges in the area date from Roman times.

  • The ruins of the church of Santa María de Villalba from the 16th century stand halfway between the lower town and the castle.
  • From the Romanesque church Nuestra Señora de la Llana , only about 100 m away and abandoned towards the end of the 18th century , the multi-tiered archivolt portal has been preserved, which is now set up in a square in the lower town.
  • The 18th century neoclassical church of San Nicolás de Bari is located in the lower town; the interior houses several baroque altarpieces (retablos) .
