Villanueva de Gumiel is a place and a municipality (municipio) belonging to the poorly populated region of Serranía Celtibérica with 279 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) in the south of the province of Burgos in the autonomous community of Castile and León .

Location and climate

The place Villanueva de Gumiel is located on the Río Bañuelos in the Castilian plateau ( meseta ) approx. 79 km (driving distance) south of the provincial capital Burgos or a good 10 km northeast of the city Aranda de Duero at an altitude of approx. 870  m . The climate is temperate to warm; Rain (approx. 480 mm / year) falls over the year.

The mechanization of agriculture and the abandonment of small farms have led to a shortage of jobs since the 1950s and, as a result, to a large part of the population moving to the cities ( rural exodus ).

economy

For centuries, the region was dominated by agriculture almost exclusively for the purpose of self-sufficiency ; Animal husbandry and viticulture were also of great importance . Long-life or preserved food such as grain , cheese , sausage, etc. could be bartered or sold at the markets in Aranda de Duero; the region's wine was shipped to Central and Northern Europe. The community is now part of the Ribera del Duero wine region .

history

Finds from the Celtic , Roman , Visigothic and even from the Islamic - Moorish period have not yet been made in the municipality. Probably towards the end of the 9th century, the area was recaptured ( reconquista ) by Diego Rodríguez Porcelos (ruled 873-885), the second count of Castile and founder of Burgos, and repopulated ( repoblación ) by his successors . The first written mention of the place name comes from the year 1196.

• The two-aisled Iglesia de San Mamés , built in the 18th or 19th century only in parts from precisely hewn stone , is dedicated to St. Consecrated to Mamas of Cappadocia , it stands on the site of a previous medieval building that was previously demolished, but whose rubble material has apparently been reused. Unlike other two-aisled buildings, the two naves were built at the same time. The bell tower (campanario) is only slightly higher than the church. The gold-plated altarpiece (retablo) and the font (pila bautismal) are from the previous building.

Surroundings

• On the outskirts there are several brick cellars ( bodegas ) covered with earth and grass .
• Two upright and apparently worked stones ( menhirs ?) Stand in a wood near the village. The smaller of the two looks more like a stele with a rounded top ; the larger one is slightly conical.
• Upstream, a three-arched stone bridge spans the Río Bañuelos.
