The mechanization of agriculture and the abandonment of small farms led to a loss of jobs and the migration of a large part of the population to the cities. The proximity to the city of Burgos and the comparatively cheap land prices let the population of the place grow again at the turn of the millennium.
economy
The region has been largely shaped by agriculture for centuries; People lived largely self-sufficient, but the markets of Burgos were also within reach. At the end of the 20th century, two industrial areas (poligonos industriales) were designated.
history
The place Pedernales belonged in the high Middle Ages to the property of the monastery of San Julián de Pedrenales . In the 13th century he came under the control of the nearby monasteries of Las Huelgas Reales and San Pedro de Cardeña . At times, the Archdiocese of Burgos also held the manor (señorio) . This situation did not change until the abolition of the monasteries and the medieval manors (desamortisación) in Spain. The name suffix Villagonzalo was only added in the 19th century; it is reminiscent of the town's most famous son, Gonzalo Téllez .
Attractions
- The two-storey town hall (ayuntamiento) is located in a former palace of the Counts of Villariezo, built in the 17th century . The facade shows a nice mixture of light-colored rubble stones and red bricks . The three-portal central risalit ends with a gable top , in which there is a stone heraldic shield .
- The three-aisled Iglesia de San Vicente with its two-storey bell gable (espadaña) and its south porch (portico) , built from precisely hewn natural stone, dates from the 16th century; however, it was redesigned in the 18th century. In the flat closed apses inside the church there are three baroque altarpieces .
