Cascajares de la Sierra is a northern Spanish town and municipality ( municipio ) with only 37 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) in the south of the Spanish province of Burgos in the autonomous region of Castile-León . The place belongs to the poorly populated region of the Serranía Celtibérica .
Location and climate
The place Cascajares de la Sierra is a good 46 km (driving distance) southeast of the provincial capital Burgos on the north bank of the Río Arlanza at an altitude of approx. 925 m . The places of interest Covarrubias and Santo Domingo de Silos are only about 15 km west and 26 km south respectively. Despite the altitude, the climate is temperate to warm; Rain (approx. 540 mm / year) falls over the year.

The mechanization of agriculture and the abandonment of small farms have led to a significant decline in the number of inhabitants since the middle of the 20th century ( rural exodus ).

The place was and is to a large extent shaped by agriculture; Mainly wheat and barley are grown . Since the middle of the 20th century, tourism in the form of renting out holiday homes (casas rurales) has been an important source of income for the municipality.
history
Small prehistoric and Celtic or Celtiberian finds were discovered in the municipality . The Roman road from Uxama Argaela ( El Burgo de Osma ) to Clunia or Asturica Augusta ( Astorga ) ran along the Río Arlanza. The Visigoth church of Quintanilla de las Viñas is only 13 km to the northwest. Moorish traces are missing. The place is likely to have arisen in the course of the resettlement or new settlement ( repoblación ) after the reconquest ( reconquista ) of the areas north of the Duero in the 10th century.
Attractions
- The three-aisled Iglesia Parroquial de la Natividad de Nuestra Señora was built in the 13th century; The Romanesque apse and the extraordinarily rich baptismal font (pila bautismal) have been preserved from this period . The apse has a small central window with inserted columns and a spherical frieze cranked over the vertical three-quarter columns . The paintings inside the apse, however, are a work of the 15th century. The bell gable (espadaña) with its lateral spherical attachments was added in the Baroque period .
- A stone fountain (fuente) is located on a stepped platform in the center of the village .
- The ruins of a watermill stand on the river bank.
