Population development

The mechanization of agriculture and the abandonment of small farms led to a significant decline in population in the second half of the 20th century.

economy

Agriculture, which also included a little cattle breeding (e.g. pigs, chickens), has always played the most important role for the population of the region; Crafts, trade and service industries developed on a small scale in the village itself. Several houses in the village are now rented out as holiday apartments (casas rurales) .

history

Iglesia de Santiago Apóstol

Celtic , Roman , Visigoth and even Moorish traces are missing, although their presence in the region is likely. Probably the place was founded or repopulated ( repoblación ) by the Counts of Castile in the 9th or early 10th century and was for a long time disputed between the kingdoms of Castile and Navarre .

Attractions

  • The Iglesia de Santiago Apóstol is a 16th century building and stands on the highest point of the place. The facade is elevated by a bell gable (espadaña) ; to the side of it rises a stair tower on a hexagonal floor plan. The interior of the church has a single nave, but it has a transept . The keystones of the rib vault show various decorative motifs. Seven different carved altars (retablos) from different style periods are worth seeing .
  • The Ermita de San Roque is on the southern outskirts .
Surroundings
  • On the eastern edge of the municipality is the old Ermita de San Vitores .
