The mechanization of agriculture , the abandonment of small farms and the associated loss of jobs have led to a significant decline in the number of inhabitants since the middle of the 20th century ( rural exodus ).

economy

The inhabitants of the rural community live mainly from agriculture (agriculture, cattle breeding and viticulture); the community is part of the Arlanza (DO) wine-growing region . Since the 1960s, the summer rental of holiday homes (casas rurales) has also played a certain economic role.

history

Nothing is known about the origins of the place; Celtic , Roman , Visigoth and even Moorish traces are missing. The place is first mentioned in a document in 1148; In December 1506, the funeral procession of Philip I stopped here under the leadership of his widow Johanna the Mad . On March 25, 1608, Philip III sold the manorial rule (señorio) over Mahamud and more than 300 other places to Francisco Gómez de Sandoval y Rojas , the Duke of Lerma.

Attractions

Mahamud - court column (rollo)
  • The Iglesia de San Miguel was built in the 14th century as a three-aisled basilica ; the rather unadorned-looking western facade, but also the other components of the church have a clear defensive character . After being damaged by the Lisbon earthquake (1755), the facade of the south transept facing the Plaza Mayor was renewed in baroque styles, which greatly enhanced the square. Inside, the altar retable (retablo) of the central apse made between 1566–1573 is impressive , but the altars in the two aisles are also remarkable.
  • On a stepped round plinth in the middle of the Plaza Mayor stands a court column (roller blind) from the first half of the 16th century with a rotated column shaft and an unusual capital top .
  • Several houses in the center of the village have an open but covered ground floor.
