Mamolar or Mamolar de la Sierra is a place and a municipality ( municipio ) belonging to the poorly populated Serranía Celtibérica with only 28 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) in the province of Burgos in the Spanish region of Castile-León . Two historical long-distance trade and pilgrimage routes meet in the village: the Ruta de la Lana and the Camino de Santiago de Sagunto ; a third way, the Camino del Cid , on the other hand, is a tourist creation.

Location and climate

The place Mamolar is located in a wooded area at an altitude of about 1085  m, about 70 km (driving distance) southeast of Burgos . The small town of Covarrubias , located about 28 km to the northwest, is also worth seeing ; the Santo Domingo de Silos Monastery is about 11 km to the northwest. The climate in winter is cool, in summer, despite the altitude, it is temperate to warm; Precipitation (approx. 540 mm / year) falls mainly in the winter half-year.

The significant population decline that has been observed since the middle of the 20th century is essentially due to the mechanization of agriculture and the abandonment of small farms and the resulting loss of jobs ( rural exodus ).

economy

The community of Mamolar was and is almost exclusively characterized by agriculture and forestry. In the past, ox carts were made, which were often urgently needed by the wagoners and traveling traders on their travels (see also: Cabaña Real de Carreteros ). The place also offered the necessary regional services in the fields of handcraft and trade.

history

Although the location of the place at the intersection of two old trade and pilgrimage routes was quite significant, little is known about the history of the place.

Attractions

The Iglesia Santa Centola is a simple rural building with a Renaissance portal from the 16th and 17th centuries. Century. While the building consists of rubble stones , the corner stones are precisely carved.
