Arauzo de Miel is a northern Spanish town and municipality ( municipio ) with a total of only 306 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) in the south of the Spanish province of Burgos in the autonomous region of Castile-León . The place belongs to the poorly populated region of the Serranía Celtibérica .
Location and climate
The place Arauzo de Miel is about 85 km (driving distance) southeast of the provincial capital Burgos on the eastern bank of the Río Aranzuelo at an altitude of about 1010 m . The next larger city, Aranda de Duero , is a good 35 km (driving distance) to the south-west. The listed town of Coruña del Conde (approx. 15 km south) is also worth seeing . Despite the altitude, the climate is temperate to warm; Rain (approx. 530 mm / year) falls over the year.

The mechanization of agriculture and the abandonment of small farms have led to a significant decline in the number of inhabitants since the middle of the 20th century. The hamlet (pedanía) Dona Santos , which still has around 40 inhabitants, also belongs to the municipality .
economy
The place was and is to a large extent shaped by agriculture; Mainly wheat and barley are grown . Since the middle of the 20th century, tourism in the form of renting out holiday homes (casas rurales) has been an important source of income for the municipality.
history
Traces of Celtic or Celtiberian settlement have been discovered in the municipality . The Roman city of Clunia is only about 14 km south. Visigothic and even Moorish traces are missing. The place Arabuzo is likely to have arisen in the course of resettlement or new settlement ( repoblación ) after the reconquest ( reconquista ) of the areas north of the Duero in the 10th century.
Attractions
- The three-aisled Iglesia de Santa Eulalia is an imposing hall church from the 16th century; she is saint Dedicated to Eulalia of Mérida . The later added portal in the style of the late Renaissance with rich arabesque decorations is impressive . In the nave (nature) and in the apse there are five baroque altarpiece (retablos) .
- The exterior of the rather unadorned Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Soledad is about 200 m from the church.
- The houses in the village are largely built from the local materials quarry stone and clay .
