In the second half of the 19th and first half of the 20th century, the population fluctuated between around 200 and 350 inhabitants. Thereafter, the mechanization of agriculture led to the migration of a large part of the population to the cities. The proximity to Burgos and the comparatively low property prices led to a resurgence of the population around the turn of the millennium.
economy
The region has been largely shaped by agriculture for centuries. Tourism hardly plays a role.
history
A family named Sarracino is mentioned for the first time in a document from 963. The name passed to a small monastery and a place of the same name in the High Middle Ages. A castle ( castillo ) also seems to have existed. In the 15th and 16th centuries, the Palacio de Saldañuela was built about one kilometer south-east .
Attractions
- The Palacio de Saldañuela goes back to a late medieval castle, of which only the main tower ( torre de homenaje ) remained. The initiative to build the actual palace with its harmoniously designed south gallery came from Doña Isabel de Osorio (1522–1589), a long-time lover of Philip II , with whom the monarch allegedly had two children. The building with its beautiful inner courtyard, completed around 1562, was acquired by Caja Burgos in the 20th century and served as a picture gallery and guest house; it was converted into a hotel in 2010.
- The parish church was originally a single-nave building with a broad, defensive-looking facade. The interior was completely redesigned at the end of the 20th century.
- The Hermit Church ( Ermita del Cristo de los Buenos Temporales ), a single-nave building with a bell gable ( espadaña ), seems to belong to the same period as the Palacio de Saldañuela . The corners of the gable field are adorned with small obelisks and spheres that are reminiscent of the approximately simultaneous construction of the Escorial .
- The Torre de los Salamanca is the only remnant of a medieval castle or fortified manor. It is also known under the name palomar ("pigeon house").
