Location and climate

The place Quintana del Pidio is about 10 km north of the Duero and about 73 km (driving distance) south of Burgos at an altitude of about 850  m ; the town of Aranda de Duero is only 15 km to the south-east. The climate in winter is harsh, but in summer it is rather dry and warm; Rain (approx. 475 mm / year) falls mainly in the winter half-year.

The mechanization of agriculture , the abandonment of small farms as well as phylloxera and powdery mildew in viticulture have led to a loss of jobs and, as a result, to a significant decline in the number of inhabitants ( rural exodus ) since the 1920s .

economy

Agriculture, which also included some animal husbandry (e.g. pigs, sheep, chickens), has always played the most important role for the population of the region; Crafts, trade and service industries developed on a small scale in the village itself. The municipality belongs to the Ribera del Duero wine region . Several houses in the village are now rented out as holiday apartments (casas rurales) .

history

Copper and Bronze Age as well as Celtic , Roman , Visigothic and Islamic-Moorish finds are missing. Around the year 910 the Castilian Count Gonzalo Fernández recaptured the areas north of the Duero for the Christians ( reconquista ) , but only hesitantly ventured further south (see Peñafiel ). The place name appears for the first time in a document from the year 1037, in which a wealthy landowner bequeathed the place and its surroundings to the Santo Domingo de Silos monastery .

Attractions

Ermita de Nuestra Señora de los Olmos
  • The apostle James the Elder (Santiago) consecrated Renaissance church was built on the site of a previous medieval building in the period after 1500; a chapel and the portal were added in the 18th century. The vaulted interior of the church contains 5 altarpieces (retablos) from different style periods and a Romanesque baptismal font (pila bautismal) .
  • The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de los Olmos is on the outskirts. Apart from the late Gothic keel arch portal, the interior of the chapel impresses with its lavish ceiling paintings.
  • Not far from the chapel there are several rock cellars ( bodegas ) driven into the crumbly rock .
