Hontoria del Pinar is a place and a municipality ( municipio ) with 661 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) in the province of Burgos in the northern Spanish autonomous region of Castile and León .

location

The three places of the municipality ( Hontoria del Pinar , Aldea del Pinar and Navas del Pinar ) are located on the upper reaches of the Río Lobos near the border with the province of Soria at an altitude of about 1050 to 1100 meters above sea level. d. M .; they are about 80 kilometers (driving distance) in a south-westerly direction from the city of Burgos . On the other hand, it is only about 60 kilometers to the east to Soria .

In the second half of the 19th and in the first half of the 20th century the number of inhabitants fluctuated mostly between about 1,200 and 1,600; the peak was recorded in 1950 with 1,657 people. Thereafter, the mechanization of agriculture led to a migration of a large part of the population to the larger cities ( rural exodus ).

economy

The region has been largely shaped by agriculture for centuries; the people of earlier times lived mainly as self-sufficiency from the yields of their fields, fruit trees and gardens and from livestock; There were and still are fish in the river. The small town acted as a regional center for craft and retail. Some of the vacant houses are rented out as holiday apartments ( casas rurales ).

history

The name of a spring pot going back to pre-Roman times refers to the former existence of a spring sanctuary for the god Airón ; The bridge over the Río Lobos probably dates from Roman times. During the time of the Islamic advance , the area became depopulated and was only repopulated ( repoblación ) after the reconquest ( reconquista ) in the 9th and 10th centuries . The first written mention of the place name comes from the year 1008. From 1213, Hontoria belonged to the property of the San Pedro de Arlanza monastery .

Attractions

• A three-arched Roman bridge in the west of the village connected the cities of Uxama (today Burgo de Osma ) and Clunia ; it consists mainly of rubble stones , which suggests medieval repairs or partial renovations. The main pillar of the bridge rests on a large rock in the middle of the river.
• A Roman spring enclosure ( Fuentona Romana ) is nearby.
• The parish church ( Iglesia de la Asunción de Nuestra Señora ) is dedicated to both the Assumption of Mary and the two Saints Cosmas and Damian . The figure-adorned main portal is - as usual in the region - on the south side. The three-aisled interior houses a Romanesque font and an altarpiece from 1622 in the strict forms of the Renaissance .
• A round pillar of judgment ( Rollo de Justicia ) rises on a square stepped pedestal near the church - a sign of the pride of the citizens of earlier times. The conical tip rests on an inverted Roman capital .

• The Ermita de San Juan stands on a rock plateau above the village. Its Romanesque portal is still there, but the rest of the church was renovated at a later date. It houses an altar resting on Romanesque columns and capitals and a crucifix from the 14th century, which occupies the central position in the baroque altarpiece.
• The hamlet of Aldea del Pinar has already received several awards for its well-tended appearance .
• The two parish churches of Navas del Pinar and Aldea del Pinar are also worth a visit.
