The mechanization of agriculture and the abandonment of small farms have led to a significant decline in the number of inhabitants since the middle of the 20th century ( rural exodus ). The municipality also includes the hamlets (pedanías) Cubillejo and Quintanilla de las Viñas, each with around 10 to 15 inhabitants .

economy

The community was and is to a large extent characterized by agriculture and livestock farming, which in the past were mainly operated for the purpose of self-sufficiency ; Mainly wheat and barley are grown . Since the middle of the 20th century, tourism in the form of renting out holiday homes (casas rurales) has become an important source of income for the municipality.

history

Cubillejo - Dolmen de Mazariegos

Prehistoric and Neolithic finds have been made in the municipality ; Celtiberian and Roman finds are missing. The church of Santa María de Quintanilla de las Viñas dates from the Visigothic period . Moorish traces are missing. The three hamlets of the municipality belonged to the Alfoz de Lara and are likely to have emerged in the course of the repopulation or new settlement ( repoblación ) after the reconquest ( reconquista ) of the areas north of the Duero in the 10th century. Later the place was called Mambligas .

Attractions

Mambrillas
  • The single-nave Iglesia de San Juan Bautista , stabilized by buttresses at the sides , was built in the late Gothic period (around 1500). Its portal-free west facade is raised by a later added baroque bell gable (espadaña) with a bell chamber behind it ; today's portal is - as usual in the region - on the south side. The nave (nave) has a flat roof and houses a font (pila bautismal) resting on a capital from the monastery of San Pedro de Arlanza ; the apse , covered by a star vault , contains a carved altar (retablo) with a central figure of John the Baptist , whose right hand refers to a Lamb of God in the other. In addition to the baroque figures, the altar also presents four paintings in the Spanish-Flemish style from around 1500.
  • There are two wells (fuentes) and a cattle trough (abrevadero) in the village .
Quintanilla de las Viñas
Cubillejo
  • The 5000 year old dolmen Mazariegos is a megalithic passage grave near the hamlet Cubillejo . All capstones are missing; those of the burial chamber with a diameter of approx. 6 m were probably the first to collapse.
