The mechanization of agriculture and the abandonment of small farms led to a lack of jobs and a significant decline in the number of inhabitants since the 1950s.

economy

The municipality of Haza is now part of the Ribera del Duero wine region . The field work is done today by only a few farmers and winemakers; some houses are rented out as holiday apartments (casas rurales) in summer .

history

No evidence of settlement has yet been found from the Celtiberian , Roman , Visigothic or Islamic periods. Before the turn of the first millennium, Haza was a controversial Christian outpost about 10 km south of the Duero border between the Moors in the south and the Christians in the north, which was repeatedly attacked and conquered by the Muslims . The foundation of the place could go back to Gonzalo Fernández , the first largely independent count of Castile ; the first written mention of the place name comes from the year 912. At the end of the 10th century, the fortress was probably taken by Almansor . In 1011 the Navarre King Sancho III conquered . the area that subsequently belonged to the Kingdom of Navarre for a number of years ; it became the capital of the Comunidad de Villa y Tierra de Aza in the High Middle Ages . The existing city fortifications were repeatedly improved.

Attractions

Iglesia de San Miguel
  • The most important attraction of the place is the fortress (castillo) , which dates back to the time of the Reconquista, with its keep (torre del homenaje) , the entrance of which was about 2 m high and could only be reached via retractable ladders or rope ladders .
  • The Iglesia de San Miguel , originally single-aisled but later expanded to include a side aisle on the north side, is dedicated to the well-fortified Archangel Michael . The west facade is impressive with a keel arch portal and a three-part bell gable (espadaña) ; on the south side there is a stair tower . In of a wooden roof covered nave (nature) are several carved altars (retablos) . Only the approximately square apse with the main altar is spanned by a ribbed vault. The furnishings include 8 Flemish panel paintings from around 1500.
