Due to the mechanization of agriculture , the abandonment of small farms and the resulting lower demand for labor, the number of inhabitants has declined sharply since the middle of the 20th century.

economy

Pradoluengo was on an important transit and trade route between Old Castile and the Rioja or Aragon . In addition, the exchange between the farmers of the plain and the ranchers of the nearby mountains took place here. From the 17th to the 19th century there was a textile production here that was known far beyond the region; the number of inhabitants rose to almost 3,000 in 1860. Today tourism plays an important role in the economic life of the municipality in the form of renting out holiday homes (casas rurales) .

history

The origin of the place goes back possibly to the Celtiberian tribes of the Autrigonians and Berons . Roman , Visigoth and even Moorish finds have not yet been made. The area used as summer pasture only possibly gained importance in the course of repopulation ( repoblación ) and then when it became the border area between the kingdoms of Navarre and Castile . Numerous Basque-Navarre place names and surnames still bear witness to the close ties to this area.

In 1720 Philip V. granted Pradolengo city rights. In 1822 the small town came to the newly founded province of Logroño (that is, to the Rioja), but this was reversed 11 years later.
