Quintanar de la Sierra is a place and a municipality ( municipio ) belonging to the poorly populated region of the Serranía Celtibérica with a total of only 1,658 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) in the northern Spanish province of Burgos in the autonomous community of Castile-León .

Location and climate

The place Quintanar de la Sierra is located on the upper reaches of the Río Arlanza about 15 km south of the Sierra de Neila at an altitude of about 1100  m . The provincial capital Burgos is just under 83 km (driving distance) in a north-westerly direction; the small town of Salas de los Infantes is only about 25 km northwest. The climate is temperate to warm; Rain (approx. 590 mm / year) falls mainly in the winter half-year.

Quintanar de la Sierra is one of the few places in the Serranía Celtiberica whose population has not decreased so much since the 1950s.

economy

Quintanar de la Sierra is located on the former road between Soria and Burgos , which is still used today . In addition to the usual self-sufficiency economy, goods and ideas came to the small town, where traders, craftsmen and service providers settled. Today summer tourism also plays a not insignificant role in the economic life of the municipality.

history

There are no finds from the Celtic , Roman , Visigothic and even Islamic-Moorish times. The area originally used as summer pasture was probably recaptured ( reconquista ) by Count Diego Rodríguez Porcelos at the end of the 9th century ; their repopulation ( repoblación ) was mainly carried out by Christians from the north of the Iberian Peninsula.

  • The local parish church (Iglesia de San Cristóbal) is dedicated to St. Christopher , the patron saint of travelers and teamsters, dedicated and dates from around 1630. The three-nave Renaissance - hall church has a late Gothic-looking star vault and several baroque altarpiece (retablos) ; it testifies to the former importance of the place. Next to the church there are some medieval sarcophagi and rock tombs.
  • The Plaza Mayor with the arcaded town hall (ayuntamiento) and a bandstand is well worth seeing.
Surroundings
  • The baroque Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Guía stands on a green meadow (prado) not far from the town .
  • The Cuyacabras necropolis , located in a forest approx. 4.5 km to the east, has around 50 graves from the 9th to 12th centuries carved into an exposed rock slab or into a rock wall. Century; other graves have been identified during the excavation work. The rock tombs belonged to a place (despoblado) that was settled in the Middle Ages but was later abandoned , and small remains of the church still exist.
  • Another necropolis with over 100 graves is located at the hamlet (pedanía) Comunero de Revenga, about 5 km to the south-east . There is also a round baptismal font (pila bautismal) in the base plate .
