Tardajos is a place on the Camino de Santiago in the province of Burgos in the Spanish autonomous community of Castile and León .
geography
The topography of the municipality is determined by the interrupted table mountains of the central Spanish table country and is therefore inconsistent: the height of the place (823 m) and the highest elevations (El Castro, 915 m, and Barrigüelo, 913 m) result in an average height of 850 m.
During the Tertiary a lake of great size and depth covered this area. Evidence of this lake are the deep sedimentary layers with fossils. The soils created in this way are very fertile. They are used almost exclusively for agriculture and are partly irrigated from the Úrbel and Arlanzón rivers.

history
The history of Tardajo can be traced back to the Celtic era of the Iberian Peninsula (here: 8th century BC). The evidence for this are archaeological finds from El Castro : walls and ceramics. The Celtic tribe was called Turmogi , they came from Central Europe and also settled the city of Deobrigula, which is partly regarded as the forerunner of today's Tardajos. Deobrigula is mentioned in the Geographia of Claudius Ptolemy and in the Itinerarium Antonini as a Roman camp. The original core of the settlement is presumed based on the archaeological finds - dating back to the Iron Age - and the discovery of Roman defenses in the aforementioned El Castro. However, there are no clear place assignments, so that the neighboring town of Rabé de las Calzadas sees itself as Deobrigula's successor.
After the final conquest of the Iberian Peninsula by the Romans and the end of the fighting with Celtiberian tribes, the settlement relocated to the plains, where its inhabitants in turn left ceramics, bronze objects and inscriptions that were easy to evaluate for posterity.
In the year 882 under Alfons III. (Asturias) began to be repopulated after the Reconquista of the area. Nuño Núñez, Count of Castile, began at the same time to build a line of defense to the castle of Castrojeriz , which follows the course of the Río Arlanzón . This includes the "Castillo de Tardajos" among others. For 929 there is a mention of "Otero de Ajos" (Hill of Garlic) and the local churches of San Pelayo and Santa Eulalia. In 1117 Alfonso VII was a prisoner of Count Pedro de Lara in the Castillo de Tardajos. The Fueros de Tardajos are from this time .
During the reign of Alfonso VIII, the Santa María district was under the control of the Burgales Bishop, while the Barrio del Rey district belonged to the Hospital del Rey . In 1749 the division of the town into two quarters continued with two churches dedicated to the Virgin Mary and St. Magdalena. There were also six Ermitas: San Sebastian, San Juan (St. John), San Salvador (Savior), Santiago (St. Jacob), San Lázaro (St. Lazarus) and San Roque (St. Roch). The connection with the pilgrimage is made clear by saints such as Jacob, Rochus and Lazarus.
Tardajos was the most important place in the comarca after Burgos until 1955 .
