Rabanal del Camino is a small town on the Camino de Santiago in the province of León in the autonomous community of Castile and León . The place belongs to the municipality of Santa Colomba de Somoza .
The place was for a long time very important for the Way of St. James because of its location before the crossing over the Monte Irago , several hospices and churches in the small place attest to the importance of the village at that time. It is possible that one of the hospices was run by the Templars as a branch of their regional headquarters in Ponferrada , from where they offered protection to pilgrims on their way through the mountains. Aimeric Picaud mentions Rabanal in Jacob's book as the end of the ninth stage.
With the renaissance of the pilgrimage to St. James, Rabanal del Camino experienced a revival. The pilgrims' hostel San Gaucelmo of the English Jacobean Brotherhood Cofraternity of Saint James played an important role . It was followed by a communal and a private hostel, and there are now several guesthouses and restaurants. The church and the hermitage of San José were renovated. From a religious point of view, the foundation of the Benedictine monastery Monte Irago in 2001 was particularly important for the place. It is currently occupied by four monks and belongs to the Archabbey of the Benedictine Saint Ottilien . In the parish church , services are held five times a day in chanted Gregorian liturgy, which are performed by the monks and the pilgrims present.

People with a special relationship to the place
Rabanal is the birthplace of watchmaker Antonio Canseco y Escudero (1838–1917), who moved to Madrid at the age of twenty and was famous in 19th century Spain for his weightless watches. In 1882 he donated a clock to his hometown, which can still be seen there on the church tower.
