The center of the municipality is the hill Cerro Tedeón (512 msnm ). The town center is also located there.

The greater part of the area is located in a deposit plain of the Iregua , through which the Río Daroca flows today . The ground relief is gentle with smaller terraces that slope towards the south. The soils are clay and marl soils that rise to the west towards Dehesa la Verde . The highest point is at 781 msnm on Cerro de la Dehesa . The rest of the municipality is slightly undulating and forms a small valley through which the Río Antiguo flows, which draws its water from the Río Iregua, drives a few mills and irrigates various land areas.

There is the Valbornedo retention basin, which absorbs excess water from Santa Coloma . The construction of the basin is dated to the founding time of the city.

2572 hectares of the 2849 hectares of municipal area are farmed, 608 hectares of which are irrigated, the remaining 1964 are drywalled (1992).

history

With regard to the name, it is assumed that the proximity to Navarre was decisive, which was greater at the time it was founded than it is today. Another theory directly dares a translation that includes the Basque word Nafarrate . As a result, the place would be called Tor Navarras in German , which reflects the local conditions of the 12th century. would quite correspond.

Navarrete was at various times the battlefield of the wars between Castilians and Navarrese . The Castilian kings tried to secure their borders against Navarre and to strengthen them with castles. For this reason, Alfonso VIII of Castile suggested that the inhabitants of the surrounding hamlets (San Llorente, San Antolín, San Pedro y Ntra. Sra.del Prado) move to a fortified place. The new site was then created around the castle on Tedeón Hill. The castle had another fortification to accommodate and protect the population in the event of a defense.

From 1192 the place received extensive fueros , which included the use of the water of the surrounding rivers, pastures, forests and the right to markets and a fair . Thanks to these privileges, Navarrete became an important place of its time.

With the surrounding villages, Navarrete formed a "Villas del Campo" called Mancomunidad . This community association united its interests in arable land, grazing and wood and was mentioned since the 11th century.

The place was donated by Henry II to Juan Ramírez de Arellano and in 1380 came into the possession of Diego Gómez Manrique de Lara , Duke of Nájera.

Domenico Laffi mentions the place in his travel description Viaggio in Ponente a San Giacomo di Galitia e Finisterrae
