Arnedillo is a place and a northern Spanish municipality ( municipio ) consisting of the main town and the hamlet (pedanía) Santa Eulalia Somera with 419 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) in the south of the autonomous community of La Rioja .
Location and climate
The place Arnedillo is on the north bank of the Río Cidacos approx. 30 km (driving distance) southwest of Calahorra at an altitude of approx. 655 m ; the provincial capital Logroño is about 61 km to the northwest. The climate is temperate to warm; Rain (approx. 525 mm / year) falls over the year.

As a result of the rural exodus as a result of the mechanization of agriculture , the number of inhabitants has decreased significantly since the beginning of the 20th century.
economy
The surrounding area and place were and are to a large extent agricultural. Thanks to a thermal spring, spa and bathing tourism has played a not insignificant role in the economic life of the municipality since the end of the 19th century.
history
The area along the Río Cidacos was already visited by humans in prehistoric and Celtiberian times; in Roman times a road from Calahorra (Calagurris Julia) led along the river into the hinterland and also touched Arnietello . In the 8th century Arab-Moorish armies penetrated into the region; they were largely pushed south in the 10th century. In 1170 the Castilian King Alfonso VIII gave the place and its castle to the Cathedral of Calahorra ; in 1252 there was an uprising of the citizens against the landlord (señor) .
Attractions
- The ruins of the medieval castle rise on a rock above the town.
- The three-aisled hall church of San Servando y San Germán is dedicated to the companions of saints Servandus and Germanus . It comes from the 16th century; its current condition corresponds in part to that of a renovation in the 18th century. The main altar from 1560 is particularly worth seeing.
- Surroundings
- There are several hermit churches (ermitas) in the vicinity of the village , including Santa María de Peñalba , San Tirso , Virgen de la Torre and San Andrés .
- In the hamlet of Santa Eulalia Somera there is still a church from the 16th and 17th centuries. Century.
- The hamlet of Antoñanzas was abandoned around the middle of the 20th century; some stone houses are still standing.
