The increasing mechanization of agriculture and the abandonment of small farms have led to increased unemployment since the middle of the 20th century and, as a result, to an emigration of many families to the big cities ( rural exodus ). The community also includes the hamlets (pedanías) Peciña and Rivas de Terseo , which still have a total of around 25 inhabitants .

economy

Bridge over the Ebro, castle ruins and clock tower

In earlier centuries, many of the city's residents lived directly or indirectly (as craftsmen and tradespeople) from farming in the area as self-sufficient . Viticulture , which has been practiced since Roman times , gained in importance, especially in the 19th century, when French winemakers settled in the village to produce wine based on the French model. The railway line built in the 19th century through the Ebro Valley runs past the village, which had a rather negative effect on its development overall.

history

Neolithic (Dolmen de la Cascaja) and Iron Age (La Nava) finds were made in the municipality; Roman , Visigoth and Moorish traces are missing. Researchers suspect that there were no major settlements in the area until the 10th century, as the troops of Caliph Abd al-Rahman III fell in 934 . in Navarre. After that, the situation calmed down a bit and larger towns emerged, but they were drawn into the border conflicts between the Kingdom of Navarre and the neighboring regions of Aragon and Castile , which lasted until the late Middle Ages . Due to the military intervention of Ferdinand II , Navarre was annexed to the Spanish crown in 1512; thereafter began a long period of internal and external peace.

Sights and culture

Iglesia de Santa Maria la Mayor
Santa María la Mayor - Retablo
Ermita de San Roque
  • The local castle (castillo) dates from the eventful 12th century , but its walls were repeatedly repaired or changed in the following centuries. In 1379 it and the whole town fell to Castile, but only 8 years later they returned to the bosom of Navarre. In the 15th century, Henry IV's troops of Castile re- conquered the area. The clock tower was built in the 16th century . In the 1st Carlist War (1833-1840) it played an important role in trying to defend the place. It was largely destroyed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
  • The Ermita de San Juan de Arriba in the upper town is the oldest (preserved) church in the town. Its origins may still be in the 12th century, but today's building largely dates from the end of the 14th century. Since the 1950s it has been the seat of the Brotherhood (cofradía) of the Holy Cross.
  • Because of its rich equipment, the 15th / 16th Iglesia de Santa María la Mayor, dating from the 16th century, may have been a collegiate church . The late Romanesque baptismal font (pila bautismal) surrounded by figure reliefs comes from the previous church. The imposing richly stocked with figures and paintings altarpiece (retablo) is Renaissance assign (ca. 1550/60); it was extensively restored in 1991.
  • The Basilica de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios , built from 1715 onwards, is actually only single-nave. The octagonal tambour above the crossing and the late Baroque altarpiece in the apse are striking . A seated Madonna figure dates from the 15th century.
  • The Ermita de San Roque , built from quarry stones in the center of the village, looks more like a block and is dedicated to St. Rochus of Montpellier and dates from the 17th / 18th centuries. Century.
  • The stone bridge over the Ebro certainly dates from the Middle Ages, but it has been repeatedly repaired; the two inner segment arches were created during the construction of three central bridge piers in the late 18th century.
Surroundings
  • The Dolmen de la Cascaja , discovered in 1954, is located at the foot of a mountain about 4 km northeast of the village at an altitude of about 600 m. A narrow passage leads into a somewhat more spacious burial chamber inside.
  • On the way between the hamlets of Peciña and Rivas de Tereso is the approx. 3.35 m high, 3.25 m wide and approx. 0.52 m thick Menhir de la Peña Lacha .
  • The pilgrimage church of Santa María de La Piscina near the hamlet of Peciña is one of the most beautiful Romanesque buildings in the Rioja.
  • The medieval necropolis of Peciña with numerous grave boxes carved into the rock floor was discovered in its immediate vicinity .
  • The Ermita de San Martín de Nava probably dates from the 12th / 13th centuries. Century. The portal shows a horseshoe arch , which is associated with Mozarabic architecture .
