As a result of the mechanization of agriculture , the abandonment of small farms and the resulting lower demand for labor, the number of inhabitants has steadily decreased since the middle of the 19th century.

economy

For centuries, the community was oriented towards agriculture for the purpose of self-sufficiency , with livestock farming (milk, cheese, meat) in the foreground. Today holiday apartments (casas rurales) are rented out mainly in the summer months .

history

Celtiberian , Roman , Visigoth and even Islamic-Moorish traces of settlement - with the exception of a late Roman grave stele - were not discovered in the municipality. The high-lying area served as summer pasture for sheep and goats for centuries . A military reconquest ( reconquista ) by the Christians did not take place, but the place was gradually settled as part of the Repoblación . In the Middle Ages, the region was disputed between the kingdoms of Castile and the Kingdom of Navarre .

Attractions

late Roman grave stele
  • At the highest point of the place is the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora Del Sagrario, built in the 17th century using parts of a previous building . The simple portal and the font (pila bautismal) of the medieval church are still preserved. The late Baroque altar retable (retablo) in the Churrigueresque style is covered during Lent with a large Lenten cloth (sarga) with Flemish-Westphalian paintings of the Passion of Christ from 1560; the cloth is one of the very few surviving specimens of its kind in Spain.
  • A multi-arched medieval stone bridge, which was later renewed, crosses the Río Iregua.
  • The mostly cobbled streets of the village are accompanied by impressive, partly plastered houses.
Surroundings
  • There are several chapels (ermitas) in and around the village .
  • On the Cerro de San Cristóbal there is a late Roman grave stele made of light granite with Latin and Celtiberian characters that can hardly be deciphered . The central part of the stele, elevated by a gable field with a central rosette and lateral acroters, shows three figures.
