The place name is first handed down in a document from the year 1020; In 1076 the place came into the possession of the nearby monastery of San Millán de la Cogolla , and later (1137) into the possession of the monastery of Santa María la Real de Nájera . In the later Middle Ages, the region was at times disputed between the kingdoms of Castile and Navarre . After the abolition of all manors (señorios) in 1811 and 1820, the area belonged to the province of Burgos and only came to the newly created province of Logroño in 1833, from which the region of La Rioja emerged in 1982.
