Villalba de Rioja is a remote, small mountain village with 160 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) in the far north of the autonomous community of La Rioja in Spain .
location
The place Villalba de Rioja is located on the Obarenes near the town of Miranda de Ebro in the adjacent province of Burgos at an altitude of about 560 m . The distance to the northern provincial capital Logroño is approx. 50 km (driving distance). The climate is temperate to warm; Rain (approx. 700 mm / year) falls mainly in the winter half-year.

As a result of the mechanization of agriculture , the abandonment of small farms and the resulting lower demand for labor, the place, like many similarly small towns in the region, is suffering from a decline in population.
politics
The mayor, Alfredo Fernández Martínez, re-elected nine times for the Alianza Popular, later Partido Popular , was replaced by Gabriel Muga in 2019 after 40 years in office. Muga is only the second mayor since the Transición .
economy
The small mountain village was and is largely shaped by agriculture, especially cattle breeding (milk, cheese). The place is also known for the neighboring hunting grounds.
Famous sons and daughters of the place
- Pedro del Castillo (1521 - 1569) founded the city of Mendoza as conquistador and lieutenant governor of the province of Cuyo during the Arauco War in 1561 .
