As a result of the mechanization of agriculture , the abandonment of small farms and the resulting lower demand for labor, the population of the place has decreased significantly since the middle of the 20th century ( rural exodus ).
economy
For centuries, the community was agriculturally oriented for the purpose of self-sufficiency , with livestock farming (milk, cheese, meat) in the foreground; The sheep's wool was used to make weaving products that could also be exchanged or sold in the markets of Logroño. Today mainly grain, potatoes and vegetables are grown.
history
The place was near a trade route that was already widely used in ancient times. Apart from small finds, however , there are no traces of Celtiberian , Roman , Visigoth and even Islamic-Moorish settlement in the municipality. There can therefore be no question of a military reconquest ( reconquista ) of the area by the Christians. The place name is first handed down in a document from 1075. In the Middle Ages, the region was at times disputed between the kingdoms of Castile and Navarre ; A battle between the armies of Kings Sancho III took place near Bañares in 1157 . of Castile and Sancho VI. held by Navarre . In 1469, the county of Bañares was established as thanks for services rendered ; the first count was Álvaro de Zúñiga y Guzmán from the house of Zúñiga . After the abolition of all manors (señorios) in 1811 and 1820, the area belonged to the province of Burgos and only came to the newly created province of Logroño in 1833, from which the region of La Rioja emerged in 1982.
Attractions
- Only sparse remains of the former castle (castillo) have survived.
- The Ermita de Santa Cruz was the former parish church of the place. Its step portal , which protrudes slightly from the structure and is slightly pointed at the apex, refers to a time of origin in the late Romanesque or early Gothic , i.e. around 1300. The Gothic group of figures depicting the Adoration of the Kings in the tympanum field was previously located elsewhere. The partly original and partly restored wrought-iron door fittings (forja) are noteworthy . In 1998 the chapel received a carved calvary from the abandoned church of Montalvo de Cameros .
- The late Gothic church of Santa Cruz , built between 1490 and 1510, has only one nave. Inside, the approximately 17.60 m high rib vaults span a length of 46 m and a width of 17 m. Their rich furnishings can only be explained in connection with the elevation of the place to the seat of a county: the natural altarpiece (retablo) completed in 1764 and the gilded three-story sacrament house from 1718 are worth seeing. The walnut choir stalls (sillería) the organ and the font deserve attention.
