history
The area along the Río Cidacos was already visited by humans in prehistoric and Celtiberian times; in Roman times a road from Calahorra (Calagurris Julia) led into the hinterland. In the 8th century Arab-Moorish armies penetrated into the region; In the year 843 there was the "Battle of Tseima" in the municipality, in which the armies of the governor of Saragossa, allied with the Christians, fought on the one hand and those of the Cordobese emir Abd ar-Rahman II on the other. The first mention of the place name Abtole comes from the year 939; in the same year the area became temporarily Christian again as part of the Reconquista . Autol belonged successively to the Kingdom of Navarre (around 1076), the county of Castile (around 1115) and the Kingdom of Aragón (around 1134); from 1176 it finally belonged to Castile, but remained controversial for a long time.
