Already in the 19th century the population of the municipality was mostly over 2000 people. Strangely enough, the phylloxera crisis towards the end of the century had no noticeable impact on the population; from the middle of the 20th century, however, the loss of jobs due to the increasing mechanization of agriculture made itself felt temporarily. The proximity to the city of Logroño and the significantly lower land prices in the countryside have led to a significant increase in population in recent years.
economy
The inhabitants of earlier centuries lived largely from agriculture, which also included a little viticulture, but to a greater extent cattle breeding. It was not until the 19th century that viticulture began to play a larger role in the Rioja , but it was only with the improved transport conditions in the second half of the 20th century that it developed into the region's dominant economic factor. Today there are around 25 wineries in Fuenmayor that produce and sell wines under the 'Rioja' designation of origin. The Bodegas El Montecillo , founded in 1876 by the Navajas family and the Bodega del Romeral , founded in 1881 by Félix Azpilicueta, were the first two wine companies to add to the community's reputation and growth.
history
Archaeological artefacts show early Celtiberian and Roman settlement. In the 6th century, the Visigoths took power in the region under King Leovigild (r. 569-586). The place was first mentioned in the 11th century in connection with a donation by Estefanía de Foix , the wife of King García Sánchez III de Pamplona to the monastery of Santa María la Real de Nájera . At the beginning of the 17th century, the residents of the village bought their independence for an amount of 6,600 ducats.
Attractions
- The Iglesia de Santa María , built on an almost rectangular floor plan, was completed around 1540; the polygonally broken apse, which closes at the same height as the church roof, appears to have been attached. The three naves of the interior of the church are almost the same height and covered by star vaults. The gilded main altar and several side altars contribute to the imposing impression of the building. The bell tower on the north side of the church was renewed in 1981 after a fire.
- The Ermita de Cristo is a baroque church building with a crossing dome raised by a lantern .
- The Palacio del Marqués de Terán from the 18th century is better known under the name Palacio de la Real Junta de Cosecheros , because in the years 1784 to 1792 a winegrowing community was established here with the aim of producing Rioja wines in Europe, that is especially in England, to make them better known. The imposing three-story building with its striking corner balconies has been in poor condition for years; many windows are walled up.
- The Palacio Fernández Bazán is another building from the 18th century. While the basement has a rather repellent effect, four balcony windows open up on the middle floor
- The Palacio de los Urbán del Campo is the oldest palace in the city and probably dates back to the 15th century. The building, clad with precisely hewn sandstone in the basement, consists of bricks on the upper floor that were previously plastered. There is an imposing stone coat of arms from the 18th century above the portal .
outside
- The Ermita de Carmen is located on a hill surrounded by vineyards about two kilometers west of the village.
Festivals
Every year on July 16 there is a procession at the Ermita de Carmen , where the Virgin del Carmen statue is carried on a support frame.
