Clavijo is a place and a municipality ( municipio ) in the autonomous community of La Rioja . It is located around 16 kilometers from Logroño .

history

The battle of Clavijo is said to have taken place near the place in 844 , for which legend has it that Ramiro I of Asturias was victorious over Abd ar-Rahman II thanks to the intervention of the Apostle Jacob . This battle, which is doubted today, developed a great deal of power in its time and in the centuries that followed, because it was here that the Apostle Jacob personally intervened in a battle of the Reconquista for the first time . Numerous representations refer to them and show Jacob on a white horse with a raised sword, Moors dying at his feet.

960 put García III. of Navarre arrested Count Fernán González in the Castillo de Clavijo after he was able to arrest him in Cirueña . The village also appears in a deed of donation in which Fernán González grants various possessions to the monastery of San Millán de la Cogolla .

1033 gave Sancho III. Garcés of Navarre the castle of the monastery of San Martín de Albelda . There seem to have been two castles at that time, one of which may have been expanded to the detriment of the other.

Another change of ownership is known for 1074, Sancho IV. Garcés of Navarre handed the castle over to Urraca Iñiguez, who in turn donated it to the Monasterio de San Prudencio de Monte Laturce in 1085 , so that there would be prayer for his soul.

On February 12, 1285, Sancho IV of Castile donated the village and castle to the town council of Logroño. Ferdinand IV of Castile changed this donation in 1311 in favor of the monastery of San Martín de Albelda.

In 1396 Diego López de Zúñiga handed over the village together with Baños de Río Tobía, Huércanos and Bobadilla to his son Iñigo Ortiz de Zúñiga. In 1476 Pedro de Zúñiga, the eldest son of Diego López de Zúñigas, sold the place to the Counts of Aguilar for 400,000 maravedís .

Attractions

  • Castillo de Clavijo

The castle was built by the Moors before the 10th century because of its strategic location: from here you can control the valley and paths along the Leza and Iregua rivers. In 923 it fell to the Christian troops under Ordoño II of León and Sancho I of Navarre .

On June 3, 1931, it was declared a Monumento Nacional (today Bien de Interés Cultural ). In 1969 it was transferred to the Province of Logroño, which had it partially restored in 1970. The keep was restored in 1999 under the direction of architect Julio Sabra.

On the castle is the sword-shaped Cruz de Santiago, the Jacob's cross, which forms part of the Riojan coat of arms.

  • Real Basílica de Santiago

This hermitage, consecrated to St. Jacob, is located on a slope of Monte Laturce at an altitude of 945 m. - It was built in the 18th century from natural stone and brick and replaced an earlier hermitage built by King Ramiro.

  • Parish Church of La Asunción

A natural stone building from the 16th / 17th centuries Century.

economy

The local economy is largely dominated by agriculture, there is also some tourism, and the Clavijo climbing school trains on the western slope of the castle, the most important in the Rioja alongside that of Arnedillo.

Local festivals

  • July 25th, Jacob's Feast: Procession with the figure of the saint from the Iglesia de la Asunción to the Basílica de Santiago en Monte Laturce. At the same time, a figure of the Virgin de Tentudía is carried by the women of the village . (The name refers to the request made to the Virgin Mary during the Battle of Clavijo to stop the day so that there would be more time to defeat the Moors.) Both figures remain in the basilica until May 23 of the following year.
  • September 29th: St. Michael's patronage festival.
