economy
For centuries, the community was oriented towards agriculture for the purpose of self-sufficiency , with livestock farming (milk, cheese, meat) in the foreground. Today holiday apartments (casas rurales) are rented out mainly in the summer months .
history
Celtiberian , Roman , Visigoth and even Islamic-Moorish traces of settlement were not discovered in the municipality. The high-lying area served as summer pasture for sheep and goats for centuries . A military reconquest ( reconquista ) by the Christians did not take place, but the place was gradually settled as part of the Repoblación . In the Middle Ages, the region was disputed between the kingdoms of Castile and the Kingdom of Navarre . Although the place is not the right letter ( fuero ) Henry of Trastamara was listed from the year 1366, it developed gradually to the capital (capital) of the Tierra de Cameros . After the abolition of the manorial system in 1811, it belonged to the province of Soria and only came to the newly created province of Logroño in 1833, from which the La Rioja region later emerged.
Attractions
- The Iglesia de San Martín , built in the 16th century - probably on the site of a previous building that had been demolished - is dedicated to St. Consecrated to Martin of Tours ; the bell tower (campanario) was added in 1764. The church has three naves; all three naves have star vaults of the same height ( hall church ). The three baroque altars (retablos) at the east end of the three naves are splendid .
- The vaults of the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de las Vegas , also built in the 16th century, have collapsed; the church is overall in a ruinous state.
- The Ermita de San Andrés with its circular apse probably has a Mozarabic origin; it is dated around the year 1000.
- The village has several wells (fuentes) , whose basin as livestock watering (Abrevadero) or as a washing area (lavadero) were used.
- A wide-span, single-arched medieval stone bridge connects the two districts.
- Surroundings
- About 2 km west of the village is the early Romanesque Ermita den San Pedro - it too shows Mozarabic influences.
