The Tierra de Cameros is a regional comarca within the autonomous region of La Rioja in the sub-region of Rioja Media in northern Spain .

geography

The total area of the comarca is approximately 855 km²; the area belonging to the poorly populated Serranía Celtibérica is only extremely sparsely populated with around 3,000 inhabitants. The average height above sea level is approx. 950  m ; the highest peaks are the Cerro Cebosa ( 1530  m ) and the Horquín ( 1585  m ). Two rivers ( Río Iregua and Río Leza ) flow through the area from south to north and flow east of Logroño into the Ebro .

history

Traces of Neolithic , Celtiberian , Roman , Visigoth and even Islamic-Moorish settlement traces - with the exception of a Roman grave stele near Villoslada - were not discovered in the municipality. The high-lying area served as a summer pasture for sheep and goats for centuries before it was settled . A recapture ( reconquista ) did not take place, but took place from 9/10. Century a resettlement or new settlement ( repoblación ) . In 1038 García III married . from Navarra Estefanía von Foix, daughter of Bernard Rogers , the Count of Foix and Bigorre , to whom he gave as a morning gift , among other goods, the ambabus Cambaribus , an area in the central Rioja known today as Tierra de Cameros . In the further course of the Middle Ages, the region was at times disputed between the kingdoms of Castile and Navarre ; In 1366, Henry of Trastamara bequeathed 40 villages of the Cameros to Juan Ramírez de Arellano, whose descendants, the Condes de Águilar and the Duques de Abrantes, remained landlords (señores) of the area for a long time in gratitude for services rendered . After the abolition of the lordship in 1811, the Cameros area belonged to the old Castilian province of Soria and only came to the newly created province of Logroño in 1822 , from which the autonomous region of La Rioja emerged in the 1980s.

From the Middle Ages to the late 19th or early 20th century, the region, which had long been used as pasture, was home to a textile industry based on sheep's wool . Migratory animal husbandry ( transhumance ) no longer plays an economic role today. Since the 2000s, attempts have been made to preserve the small towns by promoting tourism.
