The phylloxera crisis in viticulture, the increasing mechanization of agriculture and the abandonment of small farms have led to increased unemployment in the countryside since the middle of the 20th century and, as a result, to a migration of many families to small, medium-sized and larger cities ( rural exodus ).

economy

In earlier centuries, many of the town's residents lived largely as self-sufficiency, either directly or indirectly (as craftsmen and tradesmen) from the agriculture in the area . In Roman times, a trade route connected the cities of the Ebro Valley with the Cantabrian coast and the Iberian Meseta . Viticulture , which has been practiced since Roman times , gained in importance, especially in the 19th century, when French winemakers settled in the village to produce wine based on the French model.

history

Alcanadre - Aqueduct
Alcanadre - statue of Our Lady

Parts of a Roman aqueduct (Acueducto de Alcanadre) from around 100 AD are in the municipality. Visigothic and even Moorish traces are missing, although the place name certainly has an Arabic origin. In the 8th and 9th centuries, the area was under the influence of the Banu Qasi . Around the year 920 Sancho I of Navarre conquered the upper Ebro valley; he managed to establish a small Christian empire in the Iregua Valley . In 1076 the area was occupied by Alfonso VI. conquered by Castile . Around the middle of the 12th century, a certain D. Rodrigo de Azagra received the basic rule (señorio) over Alcanadre from King Alfonso VII of Castile as a thank you for his help in the - ultimately only brief - conquest of the city of Baeza in Andalusia However, a few years later passed on to the Knights Templar , who exercised it until its dissolution in the years 1307-1312. After that, the place belonged to the diocese of Calahorra .

Sights and culture

  • The single nave, but with side chapels , Iglesia de Santa María de la Asunción comes from the second half of the 16th century, but it had at least one medieval predecessor. In the years from 1700 to 1718 the crossing area was renewed. Since 1972 an approx. 1.20 m high late Romanesque statue of Our Lady has been shown inside the church , which had previously been on the outer wall of the Ermita de Santa María de Aradón . However, given its size, it is likely that this was not its original location. Also noteworthy is the baroque retable (retablo) .
Surroundings
  • The formerly 108-arched, today only 13-arched Acueducto de Alcanadre is located near the Ebro and connects the areas south of the river with the northern town of Lodosa. It has an unusual width of approx. 1.50 m, so that it could probably also be used as a road bridge (also for cattle). Some see the aqueduct as the site of the martyrdom of Saints Emetherius and Chelidonius († around 298).
