As a result of the mechanization of agriculture , the abandonment of small farms and the resulting lower demand for labor, the population of the place has decreased significantly since the middle of the 20th century ( rural exodus ). The municipality is part of the Rioja Baja wine region .
economy
For centuries, the community was agriculturally oriented for the purpose of self-sufficiency , with livestock farming (milk, cheese, meat) in the foreground; Weaving products were made from the sheep's wool and could also be exchanged or sold. But fruit, vegetables and grain were also grown. Numerous weaving mills were located here in the 17th and 18th centuries. Today holiday apartments (casas rurales) are rented out mainly in the summer months .
history
Celtiberian , Roman , Visigoth and even Islamic-Moorish traces of settlement were not discovered in the municipality. The area has served as summer pasture for sheep and goats for centuries . A military reconquest ( reconquista ) by the Christians did not take place, but the place was gradually settled as part of the Repoblación . The place name Frechuela is first mentioned in the 11th century. Since around 1040 the area belonged to García Sánchez III. created manor (señorio) of the Tierra de Cameros . In the Middle Ages the region was at times disputed between the kingdoms of Castile and Navarre ; in 1592 the Spanish crown sold the place to Sancho González, whose descendants remained landlords (señores) of the area for a long time . In the 18th century the place experienced a significant boom because of its textile production. After the abolition of the manorial system in 1811, the area belonged to the province of Soria and only came to the newly created province of Logroño in 1833, from which the La Rioja region later emerged.
Attractions
- The most important building in the area is the Iglesia de San Pedro Apóstol , which began in the early 16th century on the site of a previous medieval building, but was only completed towards the end of the century . While the exterior of the church is rather unadorned, the three-part nave (nave) impresses with its late Gothic ribbed vaults and the front of the large late baroque main altar (retablo) and its companion on the side. In 1998/9 the church received a modern bell gable (espadaña) .
- The in 17./18. Ermita de la Virgen de la Cuesta , built in the 18th century, stands in the middle of the village. The interior of the chapel with several gilded altars is impressive.
- Surroundings
- On the southern outskirts of the village, a late medieval, but later repeatedly renewed, two-arched stone bridge (Puente Laidiez) spans the Río Leza.
