As a result of the phylloxera crisis , the mechanization of agriculture , the abandonment of small farms and the resulting lower demand for labor, the population of the place has steadily decreased since the middle of the 19th century.

economy

For centuries, the community was agriculturally oriented for the purpose of self-sufficiency , with livestock farming (milk, cheese, meat) in the foreground; The sheep's wool was used to make woven products, which could also be exchanged or - after the town was connected to the railway network - sold in the Logroño markets. Today it is mainly wine and vegetable growing; in addition, grain, potatoes, etc. are grown. Tourism within Spain also plays a certain role in the town's income.

history

The name of the place can possibly be traced back to the Celtiberian tribe of the Berones , but an earlier settlement of the well-secured hill is generally assumed. Roman and Visigoth finds are missing. The Moors came in the early 8th century, but were pushed south by the Asturian and Leonese kings by the late 9th century . In 923 the Leonese King Ordoño II and the Navarres King Sancho I conquered the area of today's Rioja; Briones came to Navarre. In 1076 the Leonese-Castilian king Alfonso VI conquered . the region, after which Briones temporarily came to the House of Haro of the Kingdom of Castile . In 1256 Alfonso X of Castile granted the town urban privileges ( fueros ) . In the later Middle Ages, the region was repeatedly disputed and fought between the kingdoms of Castile and Navarre; During this time the castle (castillo) and city wall (muralla) were built . Since the 15th century, the city and its surrounding area belonged to the manor (señorio) of the House of Téllez-Girón ; in the 16th and 17th centuries the city experienced its heyday. After the abolition of all manorials in 1811 and 1820, the area belonged to the province of Burgos and only came to the newly created province of Logroño in 1833, from which the region of La Rioja emerged in 1982.

Attractions

Briones - Iglesia de Santa María de la Asunción
  • Only small remains of the former castle have survived.
  • The Iglesia de Santa María de la Asunción , completed in 1565, is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary . The exterior of the church is almost unadorned; only the upper floors of the bell tower (campanario) , built by the architect Martín de Beratúa in the middle of the 18th century, bear witness to the splendor of the interior. The star vaults of the three naves of equal height ( hall church ) are supported by late Gothic bundle pillars. The altar retable (retablo) in the middle apse dates from the early 17th century and - with its division into fields - is still to a large extent attached to the artistic sensibility of the Renaissance ; the two side altars are baroque . The church has two opposite pulpits .
  • The three-storey Palacio del Marqués de San Nicolás , built around the middle of the 18th century, towers over the other town houses and today houses the town hall.
  • The Ermita de San Juan or Santo Cristo de los Remedios is on the southern outskirts and dates from 1737–1748. While the outside of the chapel almost forms a square, the interior is designed in the shape of an octagon .
Surroundings
  • Other chapels (e.g. Ermita de los Santos Martires , Ermita de San Andrés or the Ermita de Santa Lucia ) are about 1 km outside of the village.
