In the second half of the 19th to the middle of the 20th century, the place always had between 750 and 1000 inhabitants; As a result of the mechanization of agriculture and the resulting lower demand for labor, the number of inhabitants has declined significantly since the middle of the 20th century.

economy

In the first place in the economic life of the municipality traditionally ranks agriculture and especially cattle breeding (sheep, goats, cows). In the past, wheat, barley, potatoes and vegetables were also cultivated in protected locations.

history

Before the intervention of the Roman armies, the region was part of the settlement area of the Celtic tribes of the Autrigones and Berons . Under the Roman rule, the north and center of the Iberian Peninsula belonged to the province of Tarraconensis . Sparse finds, but especially the name of the place, suggest that there was a Roman military camp ( castrum ) near Ojacastro .

The place was first mentioned in a document in 939 in a - probably forged in the 13th century - document ( Votos de San Millán ) of the Castilian Count Fernán González . In contrast, the mention of Sanchos II of Navarre from the year 974 is clearly documented . Further mentions followed in the 11th century under the names Oxa Castro, Oxacastro, Oia Castro, Oggacastro, Olia Castro, Hojacastrum, Oiacastro, Ogia Castro, Ojiacastro etc. In the year 1312 the places on the upper reaches of the Río Oja received from Ferdinand IV. of Castile the recognition of their customary rights and further tax privileges ( fueros ). While the area was politically part of Castile, the people of the mountain regions spoke Basque for a long time .

Attractions

Ermita de la Ascensión
  • The single-nave Renaissance parish church ( Iglesia parroquial de San Julián y Santa Basilisa ) from the 16th century has a transept and Gothic rib vaults . It is recognized as a cultural asset ( Bien de Interés Cultural ) primarily because of its high-quality cassette portal with various figures . It has a west tower with a square floor plan and a flat choir closure.
  • In the village square there is a court column ( rollo or picota ), which should document the judicial as well as the political independence of the place.
  • Most of the houses in the village are made of quarry stone masonry - sometimes with an upper floor of simple half-timbering . Some have corner facades ( chaflanes ).
San Asensio de los Cantos
  • The Romanesque hermit church ( Ermita de la Ascensión ) in the almost abandoned hamlet of San Asensio de los Cantos is made of precisely worked stone and houses a Romanesque baptismal font inside . Both the single-nave nave and the two-tiered apse , which is one step higher, are vaulted.
