The Google Compute Engine (GCE) is an Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) component of the Google Cloud Platform . The Google search engine, Gmail , YouTube and other services run on this global Google platform . With the Google Compute Engine, users can instantiate virtual machines (VMs) on demand . These VMs can boot from standard images or custom images . GCE can be accessed via the Developer Console, REST API or the command line (CLI). In May 2013, GCE was made accessible to all users, in 2016 there were GCE in four regions (Central US, Eastern US, East Asia and Western Europe) with a total of 13 different zones.
