Diogo Portela (born June 12, 1988 in Rio de Janeiro ) is a Brazilian darts player .

Career

Diogo Portela came to his sport through his father, who was also a well-known dart player in Brazil and took part in the World Cup of the World Darts Federation in 2005 . After further good results, Portela moved to England nine years later, where he still lives today and often trains with James Wade . From 2015 to 2017 Portela participated in the Q School of the Professional Darts Corporation , but failed to secure a tour ticket.

His greatest success at the PDC came at the German Darts Masters 2017 , where he qualified for an event on the European Tour for the first time . Together with Alexandre Sattin , he competed in the World Cup of Darts 2017 for Brazil, where the duo started the tournament in the first round with a 5-4 victory over Switzerland. However, they were eliminated in the round of 16 against the German team Max Hopp and Martin Schindler . In the same year Portela managed to secure a place in the 2018 World Cup via the South and Central American qualifications . Against his first round opponent Peter Wright , however, he lost 3-1.

The year 2018 started well for Portela, although the Brazilian was again unable to secure a tour ticket, but shortly afterwards he won his first PDC tournament on the Challenge Tour . At the World Cup of Darts he was also able to reach the round of 16 as a representative of Brazil together with Bruno Rangel . After another successful qualification for the 2019 World Cup , he met the Dutchman Ron Meulenkamp this time , despite a 2-0 lead in the sets, Portela was still defeated in the end. In October 2019, the Brazilian signed a contract with Bull's Germany , a month later he was able to qualify again as the South American representative for the 2020 World Cup, but lost in the first round to Josh Payne from England.
